WordPress sustainability check
How sustainable is my website? – WordPress sustainability check
Are you a sustainable entrepreneur or organization? Then you’ll naturally want to know how sustainable your WordPress website is. After all, websites can consume a lot of energy. How eco-friendly is your site? What’s already going well, and what could be improved? After completing the sustainability check, you’ll receive tips you can implement right away.
Why is a sustainable website important?
As a green entrepreneur or organization, you naturally take your carbon emissions into account. However, the impact of a website is sometimes overlooked, which is a shame. Issues such as non-green hosting, unnecessary plugins, and unoptimized images often lead to significant additional energy consumption and CO2 emissions without you even realizing it. Turn your words into action and reduce your ecological footprint by making your website more sustainable with sustainable web design.
An energy-efficient website is, by definition, a fast website. Because it consumes less energy, the pages load faster. Web pages that load quickly are also found more quickly in search engines such as Google and Ecosia.
What is a WordPress sustainability check?
During this review, I’ll go over the following aspects of your website:
- Hosting: Do you use green hosting, and how sustainable is your hosting provider?
- Website size: How large is your WordPress database?
- Pages and posts: How large are they, and how much CO2 do they generate? I estimate this using recognized tools.
- Themes, plugins, and media library: I check to see if there are any unnecessary or unused items and how much CO2 they generate
- Images: Are they optimized?
- Videos: Are they hosted on the site itself, or are they hosted on an external platform? And how sustainable is that?
- Code: Is unnecessary code being generated?
- Design: Are there elements that contribute to higher CO2 emissions, such as sliders?
- Outdated content: Are there outdated pages and articles on both the front end and back end of the website?

Frequently asked questions about the sustainability check
1. How sustainable is my WordPress website?
That depends on a number of factors, such as hosting, web design, plugins, themes, and much more. The sustainability check will answer these questions for you.
2. Why is green hosting so important?
Because this is truly the foundation of a sustainable website. You can optimize images, but as long as your server runs on “gray” energy from lignite mines, fossil fuels still account for a significant portion of your energy use. Green hosting ensures that your website runs on energy from sustainable sources, such as wind or solar power.
3. Do you also use AI for your sustainability check?
No, I do the verification and reporting manually.
4. In which languages do you conduct the sustainability check?
I can do this in Dutch, English, and French. Dutch is my native language (C2), and English and French are my working languages (C1).
5. I want to make my website more sustainable. Can you help me with that?
Of course. For more information, check out my website support service.
